FIELD DEVICE INTEGRATION

FDI solves the problem of integrating field devices with the multitude of networks, operating systems and control systems used in the process industries.

Field devices today are increasingly resembling embedded computers. Smart microprocessor-based devices distributed over a wide range of networks offering a vast array of data that has never been available before. The increase in data creates an information management dilemma. How can we take the storm of data created by intelligent field devices and turn it into actionable information?

The first step is to simplify the procedures required to access information on field devices through higher-level host or control systems. These procedures, known as integration, must be completed to ensure proper management of the devices in the field by the host, including configuration, replacement, maintenance and diagnostics of the devices. They must be standardized, usable on all systems, regardless of device vendors, system vendors or vendor-specific tools.

FDI have been jointly developed by leading process industry foundations, including FieldComm Group, PROFIBUS International and OPC Foundation. Major supplier companies, including ABB, Emerson Process Management, Endress + Hauser, Honeywell, Schneider, Siemens and Yokogawa, supported the project.
