The Importance of Construction for the Italian Extrusions Market

Sales of extrusions for windows and doors and facade systems continue to grow in 2023 despite the setback following the downsizing of state Superbonus and Ecobonus.

The year 2022, as was the case in 2021, again recorded another very positive result in the sales of aluminium profiles in the building industry with a double-digit increase over the previous year, especially in the distribution of extrusions for window and door construction. Certainly great benefit for the achievement of such results was due to the various incentives provided by government measures in these two years, such as Ecobonus and Superbonus.

Beneficial effects seemed to continue even at the beginning of this 2023, but a decree issued by the government in mid-February modified the regulations regarding the assignment of tax credits and the rebate on invoices, and effectively stopped local governments and regions from proceeding with these rebates which would have had a direct impact on the public debt, leaving in force the Bonus measures only in the form of tax credit deduction.
This series of events immediately created uncertainty in the construction market – including windows and doors – slowing down beyond the usual calm of the period the sales of aluminium extrusions between late February and early March.

Subsequently, however, news of another kind raised hopes for the construction market, such as the possible acceptance of some requests for amendments to the mid-February decree, specifically:

  • the extension of three months (from March 31st to June 30th 2023) for the completion of work with 110% Superbonus in maisonettes;
  • the release of credits through F24 offsetting as requested by ABI and Ance.

Other amendments also provide for the possibility for banks to transfer credits to public subsidiaries.

We are reasonably confident that despite the concerns arising from the continuing conflict in Ukraine, which affects all the different markets, the usual dynamism of Italian companies operating in the construction market will be able to achieve interesting results even in 2023 and in the years to come thanks to the investments in the construction industry in the public sector with the implementation of the NRPPs, and again the use of the 50% discount on invoices.

On the other hand, it is clear that the construction sector in our country is the focus of the attention of our decision makers as it is not only absolutely fundamental for the achievement of strategic goals regarding energy efficiency and all the new requirements of living and building, but also because obviously the segment represents a basic element for the growth of the Italian GDP. All of this gives hope for the future, as does the fact that after a phase of extraordinary increases, there is a return of aluminium billet premium quotations to 2021 values.
